This case study outlines Shell’s approach to Employee Listening as a means of measuring and enhancing engagement, while gathering relevant people data to provide leading business indicators across multiple organisational levels.

The highly volatile business environment in which organisations operate means that leaders need real-time data and insights that enable strong decision-making. A key source of insight is how people feel, think and behave at work and whether this sets a business up for success in terms of delivering the strategy.  Furthermore, research indicates that higher levels of engagement results in enhanced performance and safety outcomes.

We share examples of analytics projects to date, and describe our future-focusing employee listening approach.

  • We needed to find ways of listening to employees at all levels in a large, complex organisation.
  • Our guiding principle is to only seek data where action can and will be taken.
  • Our challenge was to translate 'people insights' into leading business indicators.
